These are the roofs I’ve been making, they are easy to make and did not cost anything.

I used good pallet wood and one of these barrels, one barrel can make up to 6 Roofs. You can also cut the sheat out in the midle and use the two ends as feeders for horses, you would only get 3 then.

Hello, You have some great tips here for building your own hives and I am going to build one myself soon. I am going on a one day bee keeping course in a couple of weeks to learn the basics so hopefully I will have my own bees before the end of this year. I live in Macroom, Cork and was wondering where you get your blue plastic water containers from as I need some on my vegetable plot for water storage and I might use one to make the hive roof.
All the best, David.
Hi David I wish you luck with your beekeeping adventure and plant growing.
The plastic barrels can be easy to get if you look around in your area for food bottling company’s.
These company’s buy in large quantity’s, so most of the food comes in these barrels. Concrete factory’s, the ones that make paving slabs also use them as they get their plasteriser in them. These need a bit of a better wash, but the chemical is not as harmful as some of the other ones that can be in these barrels. Hope that was helpful best wishes David.
Thanks for info on the barrels, I will get on to finding a source. Doing the bee keeping course this Sunday and started to build my first hive this week so all going well.
David.
